Visiting
Lukang?
Make time for Tianhou Temple
Looking for a little history, culture, and a
moment to slow down in Lukang? Head to Tianhou Temple at No. 430, Zhongshan
Road, Lukang Township, Changhua County. Dedicated to Mazu, the Heavenly Holy
Mother, this much-loved temple is a major local center of Mazu worship and one
of Taiwan’s iconic Mazu temples. Residents come to pray for peace, good health,
and smooth sailing in their work and business. With its long history, treasured
artifacts, and architectural and religious heritage, it’s also a designated national
historic monument.
Take your time exploring the three-section,
three-hall layout, from the front hall to the main and rear halls. The traditional
southern Fujian architecture is full of details worth a closer look: carved
wood and stone, colorful paintings, cut-and-paste ceramic decorations, and
intricate bracket sets. Look up at the beams and roof ridges, then check out
the door-god paintings and dragon columns. Historic plaques and artifacts add
another layer to the visit—it’s a place of worship, but also a window into
Lukang’s history and folk art.
Come to pray for your family’s well-being, or
simply enjoy the craftsmanship at a slower pace. Afterwards, walk over to
Lukang Old Street for oyster omelets, thick vermicelli soup, ox-tongue-shaped
pastries, and phoenix-eye cakes. The temple is open daily until 10 p.m., making
it an easy stop on a Lukang day trip, a family cultural outing, or a temple
pilgrimage. Save this for your next Lukang visit! 📍

way.”
The Diamond Sutra: “All conditioned phenomena
are like dreams, illusions, bubbles, and shadows; like dew and lightning.
Contemplate them in this way.”
